These paintings on sago palm bark decorate the undersides of roofs as well as the gables of ceremonial houses and depict, in abstract or figurative form, the ancestors or beliefs of the clans. Joined together, they line the ceilings or gables of these large, prestigious huts. The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York features in its permanent collection a complete reconstruction of a hut roof decorated with painted bark of this type...
