Gold Snuffbox With A Miniature Of “saint Anne Of The Trinity.” Attributed To Johann Daniel Berneaud
A rare rectangular gold snuffbox with rounded corners, crafted in the tradition of the Geneva School of Enamel from the first third of the 19th century. The hinged lid is adorned with a polychrome enamel miniature depicting Saint Anne the Trinitarian—Saint Anne, the Virgin Mary, and the Infant Jesus surrounded by four angels. The subject refers to the Western iconography of the three generations of Christ.
The enameled plaque is framed by a rich three-tone gold decoration—yellow, rose, and white—composed of floral garlands outlined with cobalt enamel lines. The sides feature a floral design with panels of deep cobalt enamel. The reverse is decorated with a guilloché background framed by a plant motif and embellished with two-tone gold. The interior is mirror-polished.
In terms of style, the work is characteristic of the Geneva masters who worked for the French market during the Restoration. The attribution to Johann Daniel Berneaud is based on stylistic comparisons and requires further study.
