Jean-Émile Laboureur, born in Nantes on August 16, 1877, and died in Kerfalher near Pénestin, in Morbihan, on June 16, 1943, was a painter, draftsman, engraver, etcher, lithographer, and illustrator.He created numerous engravings usingthe burinthat brought him considerable fame in the 1920s. These individual plates or illustrations for nearlyeighty books—often by contemporary authors such as AndréMaurois, JeanGiraudoux, Colette, André Gide, Paul-JeanToulet, Maurice Maeterlinck, or François Mauriac, ensured his success and recognition throughout his career.A painter of genre scenes, landscapes—both animated and still—and still lifes, he also created several murals and sculptures. His works are housed in several national and provincial museums. He founded or presided over associations of independent artists
