Born in Carcassonne. Joseph Stany-Gauthier trained at theat the Montpellier School of Fine Arts. In 1905, he continued his studies at theÉcole Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Paris. As a young architect and decoratorhe set up a small decorating studio. In 1908, he becameprofessor at the École Régionale de Dessin et des Beaux-Arts in Nantes, thenCurator of the Château de Nantes from 1922 until his death, and of its two museums: theMuseum of Popular Arts and Traditions, as well as the Museum of Decorative Arts.He became an important cultural figure in the region.His second passion was painting. HeBrittany, port scenes, boats, cathedrals and Breton landscapes.Breton landscapes. Some of his works are notably preserved at the Muséedes Beaux Arts de Nantes.
