A Fine Pair Of Empire-period Candelabra, Circa 1808. Model From The Palace Of Compiègne.
A very beautiful pair of gilded bronze candlesticks from the Empire period.
Resting on a circular base decorated with palmettes and foliage scrolls, this pair of candlesticks features a tapered octagonal shaft shaped like a quiver with beveled sides, ending in three sheathed feet.
The upper section is adorned with three classical female heads of Diana, crowned with a crescent moon supporting a vase-shaped candle holder with architectural decoration.
This model was crafted and delivered by Claude Galle in 1808 for Empress Joséphine’s second salon at the Palace of Compiègne. These models were produced in very limited numbers; this particular piece stands out for the exceptional quality of its chiseling—which is clearly superior—and its matte and glossy gilding.
