Pair Of Consulat-period Torches, Paris Circa 1795
The circular bases feature a decoration of stylised lotus leaves.
The quiver-shaped shafts are adorned with palmettes and surmounted by two oval faces with idealised features, the eyes slightly almond-shaped and open, surrounded by a solar halo, accompanied by rings with owl friezes. The expression is neutral, solemn, almost hieratic, like an allegorical figure or an ancient god with a halo.
High-quality gilding and chiselling with a dual matt and glossy patina.
Produced around 1795, at the beginning of the Consulate/Empire, these objects reflect the neoclassical vogue that dominated decorative art after the Revolution, seeking to reinterpret antiquity with luxury and rigour.
The artwork can be viewed by appointment in Paris.
