A Pair Of Candlesticks From The Consulate Period, Circa 1800
An elegant pair of large candelabra in finely chiselled and gilded bronze, of remarkably refined workmanship. The design is based on a neoclassical iconography characteristic of the Consulate period, featuring three figures of helmeted Athena rendered as caryatids supporting the lampshades. The smooth shaft rises from a circular base finely decorated with large palmettes, resting on three feet.
The quality of the engraving, together with the subtle contrast between the matt and glossy gilding, attests to a high standard of craftsmanship, consistent with the works attributed to the workshop of Claude Galle, a leading Parisian bronze artist of the late 18th century and the early Empire period.
The stylistic attribution is consistent with the artist’s known body of work; although there is no visible mark, it is characteristic of the output of his workshop.
