A Consulat Mahogany Desk Chair, Circa 1800

Artist: Cressent
A finely moulded mahogany and mahogany-veneered armchair, with a curved backrest featuring an openwork design depicting an Athenian woman, an emblematic motif of the Neoclassical ornamental repertoire. The baluster-style armrests rest on tapered front legs and sabre-shaped rear legs.

A comparable model is reproduced in Denise Ledoux-Lebard, *Le Mobilier français du XIXe siècle, 1795–1889*, Éditions de l’Amateur, Paris, 1989, notably in the section devoted to Cressent (pp. 138–139).
A set comprising four armchairs and two chairs in mahogany, with slightly sloping backs and openwork decoration, stamped ‘Cressent’ and dated to the Consulate period, provides a particularly close comparison with this armchair.

The frame and seat are in good overall condition. Upholstered in yellow leather.
Original shellac finish, displaying a patina consistent with the piece’s age.
