LARGE CHOCOLATE CUP and SAUCER, porcelain, PARIS—Manufacture of the DUKE OF ANGOULEME—18th century—LOUIS XVI

Featuring a RARE ORNITHOLOGICAL design.

The cup features a white background adorned with a large oval medallion containing a rich polychrome decoration of three perched birds. This medallion is framed by extensive gilded ornamentation consisting of palmettes, leafy scrollwork, garlands, and small floral friezes. Gold fillets adorn the rim and handle of the cup.
The saucer features the same design. The rim is punctuated by three oval medallions, each adorned with a polychrome bird depicted in a landscape. These medallions alternate with gilded motifs of palmettes, foliage scrolls, and hanging garlands. The cup’s interior, bordered by a thin wreath of gilded foliage, features a polychrome butterfly at its center. Gold border around the rim.
