Cubist Women – Circa 1950 – Oil On Canvas, Saburō Amano (1919–2006) #193
Artist: Saburō Amano (1919–2006)
Oil on canvas, minor wear, scuffing, and craquelure—circa 1950—titled “flowers” on the back.
A dedication on the back appears to refer to Toyoshima Yoshio, 1890–1955, a Japanese writer, novelist, and translator (of *Les Misérables*, for example). He was part of the modernist literary circles. The inscription thus appears to link the painting to an event organized in honor of the writer.
Saburō Amano (天野三郎, 1919–2006), a Japanese painter born in Yamanashi Prefecture, belongs to the yōga tradition (Western-style painting). A 1942 graduate of the Department of Fine Arts at Nihon University, he studied under Kenzō Okada (1902–1982, trained in Paris and Japan) and Kinosuke Ebihara (1904–1970, active in Paris, a student of Foujita).
Admitted to the Nika Exhibition in 1950, he exhibited there regularly and received the gold medal in 1962.
Invited to the Salon d’Automne in 1970. Recipient of the Prime Minister’s Award in 1987. His body of work includes abstract compositions and figurative subjects. Several of his paintings are held in Japanese museum collections: the Itabashi Museum in Tokyo, the Joshibi Art Museum, and Kyoto National Museum of Modern Art. He passed away in 2006.
