François-Augustin Guille, known as Archiguille, was born on May 17, 1932, in Alès, France. He spent his childhood in Vendargues, where he was deeply influenced by the interplay of light in the stained-glass windows of the Church of Saint-Théodorit, his father being the sacristan. This early fascination with light profoundly influenced his artistic development. Between 1946 and 1948, Archiguille attended the arts and crafts training center in Saint-Jodard, in the Loire region. In 1952, he settled in Paris and worked in a postage stamp factory.
Without formal academic training, he began with figurative painting and held his first exhibition in 1953 at the Librairie de l'Institut in Paris. In 1956, his meeting with Georges Braque proved pivotal. Following Braque's advice, Archiguille deepened his mastery of figurative painting to better understand and experience his own work. In 1957, he began exploring lyrical abstraction, an artistic movement characterized by spontaneous and gestural expression.
In 1965, Archiguille exhibited at Bernheim-Jeune, exploring the concept of "Transfiguration," an artistic approach he developed to fuse figuration and abstraction. That same year, he founded the School of Transfiguration in Chicago, aiming to create a "magnetic field" between these two forms of expression.
Under the patronage of André Malraux, he exhibited in 1968 at the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris alongside artists such as Hans Hartung and Georges Mathieu. Malraux is said to have declared of him: "He is probably the most gifted of his generation."
Archiguille's works are featured in numerous prestigious private collections, notably belonging to François Mitterrand, Claude Pompidou, Jacqueline Kennedy, Coco Chanel, Ari Onassis, Sophia Loren, the Emperor of Japan, and the King of Spain. François Archiguille passed away on August 30, 2017, in Switzerland, leaving behind an artistic legacy marked by his quest for light and his exploration of "Transfiguration."
