Naval Dagger — Second Empire Officer's Model With Eastern Influences
The handle
shank is made of ebony, finely engraved with fluting, providing an excellent grip. It is topped with a rivet-knob pommel made of gilded brass. The straight guard, made of superbly chiseled brass, features a central floral and geometric design, ending in two quillons shaped like inverted volutes and engraved with rosettes.
The blade
A curved, single-edged blade. Its pronounced curve reflects an Oriental influence, which was appreciated by naval officers following their distant campaigns. The blade has undergone
a restoration that has stabilized the original signs of aging while revealing a beautiful period engraving bearing this highly evocative maxim: “To save an honest man by killing a scoundrel is to render a double service to mankind ”
The scabbard
Original scabbard fitted to the curve of the blade, lacking its pommel button for belt attachment and a spherical brass end cap. The scabbard has also undergone a restoration to restore its historical luster.
Note This officer’s dagger is truly extraordinary. Beyond its exotic appearance, the presence of an engraved inscription—both philosophical and defiant—makes it a unique piece of living history.
