Naval Officer's Sword, Model 1837, From The Second Empire
A beautiful, richly decorated example of a Model 1837 naval officer’s saber. The markings on the back of the blade indicate that it dates from around 1860.
These sabers remained in service from 1837 until the early 20th century. They are decorated to varying degrees, depending on the period and the owner’s rank. The most sought-after remain those from the uly Monarchy and the Second Empire, which is the case with ours.
Enveloping guard with a single branch decorated with a coil of rope. Openwork guard plate adorned with a nautical anchor surrounded by garlands of flowers. Quillon curved downward, resembling the head of a sea monster. A scallop shell is depicted on the counterguard. Cap with along tail with melon-shaped ribs, a sandblasted background, and adorned with flowers and a series of scallop shells. Ring ferrule for the sword strap. Horn handle, which has never had a filigree inlay.
Slightly curved blade with a hollow edge and a groove. The back of the blade is engraved “Coulaux et Cie – Klingenthal.” Counter-edge and point aligned on the axis.
Black varnished leather scabbard with three trims. Stitching along the back. Pommel with a button bearing the naval anchor surmounted by the imperial crown on a striated background. Central fitting decorated in the same style. Pommel cap beautifully carved with palm leaves and leafy garlands.
This saber is typical of the period. It belonged to a high-ranking officer, as evidenced by the richness of the fittings’ decorations.
It is in good condition with a small repair at the bottom of the scabbard.
