Henri-Louis Dupray 1841-1909. French painter of military and historical scenes
Louis Henry Dupray or Henri Dupray, born November 3, 1841 in Sedan and died April 17, 1909 in Paris (15th arrondissement), was a French painter, engraver, and illustrator. He is known primarily for his history paintings, particularly military scenes. Initially intended for a military career, Henri-Louis Dupray was forced to abandon this path following a horse riding accident. His interest in art grew, particularly through technical drawing, and he quickly became a student of the painters Léon Cogniet and Isidore Pils at the Beaux-Arts in Paris. From the beginning of his artistic career, Dupray specialized in the representation of military subjects, devoting himself only very occasionally to the development of portraits. From 1863, he exhibited regularly at the Salon and, in 1865, became a member of the Society of Etchers. The painter Édouard Manet belonged to his circle of friends. Scenes from the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars predominated in Dupray's work until 1870, when more and more drawings, paintings and illustrations relating to the Franco-German War of 1870 were added. He participated in the design of the Binant series. He was named a Knight of the Legion of Honour in 1878. In addition to oil paintings, Dupray produced various etchings throughout his life (École de tambours, La Patrouille, Brigadier, etc.). His drawings appeared several times in the magazine Le Courrier français and he was repeatedly entrusted with the role of book illustrator for various authors such as Alfred de Vigny, Henri Dupont-Delporte and Victor Hugo.
