Colonial Administrative Seal Matrix - President Of The Douar Of Sidi-dyaho - Tunisia
An interesting and rare official seal matrix made of white metal (white bronze or a low-quality silver alloy) dating from the era of the French Protectorate in Tunisia (late 19th century or first half of the 20th century). [1]
This type of large official seal was used to authenticate civil and administrative documents within indigenous territorial structures. The upper surface features a movable handle hinged at a joint, with a traditional multi-lobed design centered on a hollowed-out crescent moon.
The stamp die, engraved in intaglio and in reverse for application (wax or ink), bears the circular inscription in capital letters:
"THE PRESIDENT OF THE DOUAR OF SIDI-DYAHO"
A fascinating historical artifact, bearing witness to the Franco-Tunisian administrative organization and local officials (Caïds, Khélikas, or Presidents of douars). Perfect for a cabinet of curiosities or a collection of colonial history.
