Antique Silver Snuff Box In The Shape Of A Shoe, Hanau Thomas Glaser, London, 1890

A beautiful antique silver snuffbox, crafted in the shape of an elegant ladies’ high-heeled shoe. It is richly decorated on all sides with figures, rural scenes, flowers, and rocaille motifs. The hinged lid is located on the top.

This snuff box was likely made around 1890 in Hanau, Germany, in a historicist style inspired by the 18th century. The crown, fleur-de-lis, and other French-style symbols are pseudo-hallmarks characteristic of those used on Hanau silverware.

The side also bears a series of official London hallmarks:

• TG: registered hallmark of the maker and importer, likely Thomas Glaser;
• passing lion: sterling silver, 925/1000 fineness;
• letter P: London date letter, likely 1890–1891;
• letter F: “Foreign,” applied to silverware manufactured outside Great Britain;
• leopard’s head: hallmark of the London Assay Office.

The shoe was therefore likely made in Germany, then imported to England by Thomas Glaser and officially assayed in London as sterling silver.
