This Turkmen Tekke rug, dating from the mid-20th century, immediately catches the eye with its architectural design. Here, there is no large field covered with traditional güls: the composition is structured as a series of frames, registers, and panels. This almost architectural arrangement gives it a particularly strong graphic presence.

The eye is drawn to the two large brick-red compartments, arranged on either side of a central register. They are crisscrossed by extremely regular rows of small stylized motifs, rendered with remarkable precision.

In the center of each appears an almost totemic vertical form, surrounded by geometric motifs. Between these two compositions, a lighter-colored panel, punctuated by a dense network of small symbols, creates a sense of breathing room and reinforces the perfect structure of the whole.

All around, the borders multiply. Some are very narrow, others more prominent, each with its own rhythm: hooks, small cross-shaped forms, X-shaped motifs, and repeated geometric elements. This accumulation could make the composition feel cluttered; instead, it produces remarkable coherence. Each section seems to respond to the next.

The color palette contributes greatly to this harmony: brick red and terracotta, tobacco beige, ivory, nearly black brown, indigo blue, grayish blue, and light green. These relatively muted hues lend the rug a great deal of character without ever making its design appear harsh.

Finally, its nearly square and particularly compact size—150 × 128 cm—further enhances its decorative appeal. All the richness of a large Turkmen rug seems concentrated here within a smaller area, featuring a dense, precise, and surprisingly contemporary design.
