Pair Of Maruni Satsuma Vases, Meiji Period, In Perfect Condition

Artist: Satsuma

We are delighted to offer this exceptional pair of Japanese Satsuma earthenware vases, dating from the late Meiji period. Produced by the renowned Maruni company in Kobe, these vases are a testament to craftsmanship of the highest quality. They stand out for their impressive size of 24.8 cm, lending them undeniable decorative presence.

The hand-painted decoration is remarkable, depicting an autumnal landscape with maple leaves, chrysanthemums, bellflowers, and birds in flight. The polychrome glazes are enhanced by rich, raised gilding (moriage) on a finely craquelé cream-colored glaze.

The bases bear the Shimazu clan crest, the Maruni signature, and the inscription “Dai Nippon.” It is rare to find a pair of vases of this size with such a refined floral design.

Condition

The condition is simply magnificent. Both vases have been thoroughly tested under UV light: they show no signs of restoration, no cracks, and no chips. The only thing worth noting is very slight natural wear on the gilding around the neck.
