Object description :

"Vase With Dragons And Phoenix, Fukagawa - Koransha, Arita - Imari, Japan, Meiji Era (1868-1912). "
Magnificent Japanese vase in hand-painted and gilded porcelain. The scenes depicted show a pair of dragons and phoenixes, kacho-ga-type scenes (representations of birds and flowers), and various ornamental friezes. The Japanese phoenix – Hōō – is derived from the Chinese model – Fenghuang. It is a symbol of virtue and charm; its appearance heralds the warmth of summer, as well as peaceful and happy times. The Japanese dragon, Ryū, is associated with the water element. In images, it often emerges from waves or clouds, symbolizing strength and wisdom. The dragon and phoenix pair is often identified with the imperial couple, the dragon representing the emperor and the phoenix the empress.

Arita – Imari, Japan, Meiji era (1868-1912).
