Travel Writing Case, Japan, Edo Era, 19th Century.
Travel writing case - portable desk made in Japan based on European objects. It is made of wood covered with lacquer. The floral motifs represent a variety of flowers, including hibiscus, vines, lilies or rowan trees. The flap of the cabinet is decorated with a relief lacquered and gilded decoration representing a seascape, with buildings, boats and coastal vegetation. The interior contains a folding desk, storage compartments and a place for an inkwell.
