Woman With Amphora, Bronze, Val d'Osne, 58 Boulevard Voltaire, Paris, 19th Century.
This bronze sculpture depicts a female nude. The figure stands in delicate counterpoint on a base imitating an irregular rock. Her silhouette is slender, with soft muscular modeling characteristic of academic aesthetics. In her raised right hand, the woman holds a small amphora (a pitcher) from which she symbolically pours water or wine. Her left hand is held slightly lower, as if to hold back the flow of liquid.
Bronze with patina.
France, Paris, 4th quarter 19th century.
Signed: "Fontes d'Art et Bronzes VAL D'OSNE PARIS 58 Bd Voltaire" and "ÉPREUVE DE E. VERDIÉ"
Dimensions: 55 x 20 x 13 cm.
Very good condition, a few light scratches on the patina.
Val d'Osne - The foundry was founded in 1835 by Jean-Pierre-Victor André in Osne-le-Val (Haute-Marne department). André had a revolutionary idea: he wanted to combine industrial production with the highest level of artistry. Using foundry technology (mainly cast iron, but also bronze), Val d'Osne brought magnificent statues, fountains and architectural details to towns and the burgeoning middle class. The company reached its peak in the second half of the 19th century. Val d'Osne became a regular at the World's Fairs:
London in 1851, and Paris in 1855, 1867 and 1878. The company employed the best sculptors of the day. Foremost among them was Mathurin Moreau, who not only designed sculptures for them, but also became one of the company's directors and shareholders. It's precisely for this reason that so many of Val d'Osne's sculptures bear the hallmarks of his style - graceful, classical and idealistic. The foundry's creations include: the Wallace fountains, those distinctive green fountains adorned with caryatids that are still a symbol of Paris today, as well as the gilded sculptures on the Alexandre-III bridge over the Seine.
