Vase With Figures And Phoenix, Kosen - Matsubara, Kutani, Japan, Meiji Period (1868-1912).

A meticulously hand-painted and gilded porcelain vase. One side depicts a woman with a child surrounded by lush vegetation, with mountains in the background. Above them, the majestic Japanese phoenix (Hōō) is visible. The other side of the vase also shows birds, including another phoenix. The Japanese phoenix (Hōō) is derived from the Chinese phoenix (Fenghuang). It symbolizes virtue and charm; its appearance heralds the warmth of summer, as well as peaceful and happy times.
