Cloisonne Dish With Phoenix, Japan, Meiji Era (1868-1912)
A brass dish covered with cellular enamel - cloisonné. The rich composition shows a phoenix in the center and a variety of colorful ornaments around it. The Japanese phoenix - Hōō - is derived from the Chinese prototype - Fenghuang. Symbol of virtue and grace, its appearance announces the heat - the summer - as well as peaceful and happy times.
