Vase, Matsuoka, Totai Shippo, Japan, Meiji Period (1868-1912).
Atypical vase made using the Totai Shippo technique, a variant of the cloisonné technique. Here, honeycomb enamel covers a porcelain vessel. The decoration depicts a bird in flight and a variety of vegetation, including peony flowers and bamboo. In Japanese culture, bamboo symbolizes resistance and flexibility, while the peony, nicknamed "Queen of Flowers", symbolizes wealth, honor and feminine beauty.
