Large bronze Buddha in the Mon Dvaravati style, both hands in Jnama mudra, 19th century or earlier. Good overall condition with a single small crack on the sanghati. H 102 cm x W 37 cm x D 20 cm Height on its base 120 cm The bronze is attached to the base and perfectly stable. Provenance: Succession Claude de Marteau The Dvāravatī style developed in the Mon kingdom of Dvāravatī, which flourished in the central region of present-day Thailand from the 6th to the 11th century, its main Dvāravatī cities included U Thong, Nakhon Pathom, Phong Tuk, Si Thep, Khu Bua and Si Mahosot. The style is inspired by Gupta and post-Gupta art of India, particularly in the modeling of bodies and faces. This style reflects the physical characteristics of the Mon people, with broad faces and noses, full lips, and often joined brow ridges.
