Burmese Wooden Buddha, Ava
Large Burmese carved wooden Buddha, depicted in the classic bhūmisparśa mudrā posture, characteristic of the "School of the Elders," known as Theravada, the oldest and most conservative branch of Buddhism, direct heir to early Buddhism. The throne, still low and understated, reflects the Ava style; however, it features pointed lotus leaves, precursors of the decorations that would become prominent on the taller thrones of the Konbaung period. Myanmar, Ava, late 17th/early 18th century. (Late Ava/Konbaung transition) In very good condition, the flame is no longer present. Wooden additions beneath the base, made during period restorations (circa 1960), compensate for the tilt caused by natural wood erosion. Provenance: Claude de Marteau Collection. Sold with certificate of provenance. H 75 cm x W 41 cm x D 54 cm. View this Burmese wooden Buddha, Ava, in full screen on Vintage Addict
