Pair of swivel office chairs, Executive model, Charles Pollock for Knoll International, United States, third quarter of the 20th century.

Designed in 1963, this model represents one of the most accomplished designs for a modernist executive chair. The technical design relies entirely on a chrome-plated, extruded aluminum rim that encircles the shell along its perimeter: it simultaneously provides structural support, tensions the upholstery, and finishes the edge. The frame is concealed within this single profile, which explains the absence of any visible hardware.

The outer shell is made of black plastic, with the armrests extending from the rim in a single, fluid curve. The upholstery, shown here in burgundy leather, is button-tufted and abuts the rim without covering it.

The four-star base, fitted with fixed glides, corresponds to earlier editions prior to Knoll’s switch to five-star bases on casters. The seat swivels 360 degrees; it does not feature height adjustment.

◼ CONDITION REPORT (Transparence Galerie)

In very good condition. The burgundy leather is sound, supple, and well-conditioned, with no tears or cracks. Chrome shells and rings are in good condition.

One minor blemish should be noted: a very faint pen mark on the seat of one of the two pieces, barely visible to the naked eye. Normal creases consistent with the piece’s age are present on both seats.
