Two Model 1816 Foot Artillery Swords – Klingenthal – July Monarchy – Circa 1831

A pair of French infantry artillery swords, Model 1816, from the July Monarchy era, preserved with their original black leather scabbards featuring brass fittings.

Both swords feature cast brass mountings, with baluster-style hilts entirely decorated with rows of scales and secured by three steel rivets. The pommel is ovoid, and the straight crossguard ends in two rounded quillons.

Thick, straight, double-edged steel blades featuring the long blood grooves characteristic of the Model 1816.

The first sword bears a cursive inscription from the Royal Manufactory of Klingenthal on the heel of the blade, as well as a date that reads “July 1831.” Various inspection hallmarks are present on the blade and mount, as well as regimental markings or serial numbers on the guard.

The second sword, of similar construction and dimensions, also bears various regulatory hallmarks at the heel of the blade, which are now partially erased. Its guard clearly bears the number 30.

Both swords are accompanied by their original black leather scabbards with brass fittings. The second scabbard clearly shows the longitudinal seam in the leather on the reverse side, characteristic of its traditional construction. The first scabbard also bears various hallmarks on its fittings.

A particularly decorative set representative of French weaponry from the first half of the 19th century.

This is a combination of two swords of the same model and period, not a guaranteed original pair.

Good overall condition for its age. Signs of use, minor oxidation and pitting on the blades, and wear and marks on the leather and brass consistent with their age. See numerous detailed photographs.
