Bronze Medallion - Venus Arethusa - Signed F. Barbedienne - 19th Century
Elegant circular bronze medallion with brown patina, depicting the profile of the nymph Arethusa, an emblematic figure from Greek mythology, here surrounded by stylized dolphins evoking her connection with waters and springs.
The treatment of the face, the finesse of the flowing hair and the overall composition are fully in keeping with the neoclassical taste of the 19th century, inspired by ancient models, notably the famous Syracuse coins featuring Arethusa.
The work is signed on the border F. Barbedienne, a famous 19th-century Parisian foundryman renowned for the quality of his art bronzes and reproductions of antique models.
The reverse features a rough cast with its antique attachment system.
