Artist: Antoine Joinville (1801-1849)
Drawing by Antoine Edmond JOINVILLE (1801–1849) depicting a landscape, executed in black pencil, inscribed in the lower right corner “Tomb of Phalaris, Agrigento” and dated 1825. This site is in fact the Oratory of Phalaris, a small ancient funerary monument or sanctuary located in the Valley of the Temples in Agrigento, Sicily. Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, JOINVILLE was a classical painter who worked in Italy (which he first visited in 1824) alongside Edouard BERTIN, CARUELLE D’ALIGNY, and COROT.
