Important Napoleon III Center Table In Blackened Wood And Gilt Bronze – 19th Century

An important Napoleon III period center table in blackened wood, embossed leather and richly ornamented with gilt-bronze mounts.

Of particularly impressive presence, the table features a shaped and scalloped top, centered by an embossed leather panel with stamped decoration.

The top is protected by a custom-made glass panel produced from a template. According to information supplied when the table was purchased from Galerie Napoléon III in 2016, the glass was made by a specialist glassmaker in Bordeaux using a traditional manufacturing process comparable to techniques employed in the 18th century, in order to reproduce the characteristic appearance of antique glass.

The blackened-wood apron is extensively decorated with finely chased and gilt-bronze mounts featuring scrolls, foliage, rosettes and ornamental motifs. According to information supplied at the time of purchase, the substantial gilt-bronze ornamentation represents approximately 20 kg of bronze.

The table stands on an impressive architectural central support, itself richly adorned with gilt-bronze mounts, extending into four boldly curved legs embellished with further gilt-bronze decoration and terminating in casters.

The contrast between the blackened wood, embossed leather and abundant gilt bronze is highly characteristic of the sumptuous decorative taste of the French Second Empire.

According to information transmitted when the table was acquired from Galerie Napoléon III, it is said to have formerly furnished the Hôtel du Palais in Biarritz, the former imperial residence. This provenance is stated subject to documentary confirmation.

A highly decorative and imposing piece, ideally suited as a center table in a grand salon, entrance hall or refined period interior.
