Pavel OVCHINNIKOV (1830–1888)
Guardian Angel Icon (Ангел Хранитель).
Painted plaque set in a curved oklad in 84 zolotniks silver (875/1000), gilded and polychrome cloisonné enamel.
Moscow, late 19th century (circa 1880–1890).
Goldsmith’s master mark П. ОВЧИННИКОВЪ under the Imperial eagle (Supplier to the Court), “84” standard mark with the head of Saint George.
Cyrillic titling “Ангел Хранитель” (Guardian Angel) framing the halo.
H 15.5 cm ; W 8.5 cm
Very good condition.

Provenance: Private collection; Christie’s sale, 17 November 1981, lot 121 (original label on the back).

Represented standing in a composition of great finesse, the Guardian Angel is dressed in a white tunic and a draped pink mantle, holding the cross of faith in his right hand. The painted plaque is set in a curved mount forming an oklad in gilded silver, enhanced with a rich border in polychrome cloisonné enamel with a geometric decoration rhythmically alternating blue, white, and red nuances.

Although Byzantine and Russian iconographic tradition frequently associates angelic representations with the celestial armies led by the Archangel Saint Michael, the painted titling on this piece here unambiguously designates the Guardian Angel. This creation perfectly illustrates the excellence, delicacy, and preciousness of Pavel Ovchinnikov’s workshops, renowned Supplier to the Imperial Court of Russia.
