Pierre Duménil (1862–1942) – Chartres Cathedral – Oil On Canvas
Oil on canvas by Pierre DUMÉNIL, representative of his work on light and religious architecture.
The work depicts the ambulatory and the sculpted choir tower of Chartres Cathedral, with the reflections of the stained-glass windows on the floor.
Dimensions: 47.5 x 70.5 cm
A student in Paris of the history painter Merry-Joseph Blondel, Pierre DUMÉNIL (1862–1942) was firmly rooted in the tradition of the late 19th-century French School. A regular exhibitor at the Salon des Artistes Français, he distinguished himself as part of the architectural luminism movement. His academic training gave him a perfect command of perspective and chiaroscuro, particularly evident in his depiction of the vaults and the play of light filtering through the stained-glass windows.
