Large Oil On Canvas Painting By Antoine Richard (1822-1891)
Oil on canvas signed and dated A. Richard 1884. Family music.
Charming genre scene depicting characters playing music. The ensemble exudes a warm atmosphere, in a spirit inspired by Flemish paintings.
Antoine Richard was a 19th-century French painter from Chalon-sur-Saône, born in the early 19th century (precise dates of birth and death not clearly established). He belongs to that generation of artists trained in the French academic tradition.
He was a pupil of Léon Cogniet, a renowned history painter and influential teacher at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, who trained many artists of the Romantic and Academic periods.
Antoine Richard made his debut at the 1859 Salon, an essential milestone for artists of his time, marking his integration into the official art circuit. His participation in this exhibition attests to a recognized level of training and a willingness to join the ranks of institutional painting.
His work is mainly in the tradition of genre painting, very much in vogue in the 19th century. In it, he depicts scenes of everyday life, often inspired by popular or rural interiors, in a style influenced by the Flemish and Dutch masters of the 17th century. His compositions are characterized by attention to detail, a certain gentleness in the treatment of figures and an intimate atmosphere.
One of his works, entitled Une blanchisseuse, is preserved at the Musée de Reims, where it entered through a bequest, testifying to the institutional interest in his work.
Today, Antoine Richard appears as a typical representative of these academic painters of the 19th century, whose production, between tradition and observation of everyday life, seduces by its narrative and decorative charm.
