A rare and ancient fragment of a carved, polychrome, and gilded wooden altarpiece depicting an episode from the Passion: Christ before Pontius Pilate.

Description

The scene, carved in high relief, depicts Christ standing, surrounded by several figures, facing Pilate, who is seated on a raised throne beneath architectural elements that are now partially lost. The dense composition, the layering of the figures, and the sometimes almost caricature-like expressiveness of the facial features are characteristic of religious sculpture from the late Middle Ages and early Renaissance.

The piece retains interesting traces of its original polychromy and gilding, particularly visible on the clothing and architectural elements. The reverse side, left unfinished and bearing traces of the sculptor’s work, suggests that it was likely intended as an element to be incorporated into the frame of an altarpiece dedicated to the Passion of Christ.

In terms of its format, narrative composition, and treatment of the figures, this sculpture can be compared to works from the former Southern Netherlands or, more broadly, Northern Europe, though it cannot be definitively attributed to a specific center in the absence of a mark.

Late 15th–first half of the 16th century.

Condition

Fragmentary, consistent with its age: significant gaps in the composition and architecture, damage, wear, and old signs of wood-boring insect infestation. Traces of original polychromy and gilding remain. Nevertheless, the piece retains a remarkable presence and the archaeological character typical of High Middle Ages altarpiece fragments.
