"cristo Patiens" In Wood With Original Polychrome Paint, Central Italy, Early 16th Century.
An interesting wooden sculpture of Christ on the cross in the typical iconography of the "Cristo Patiens," featuring its original polychrome paint and a loincloth created by applying a mixture of plaster and rags and subsequently gilded with gold leaf, which is exceptionally well-preserved; thus, it is not carved but executed using this particular technique. The sculpture was recently cleaned by a professional restoration studio, which brought to light the original polychromy, which is in excellent condition and displays vivid, saturated colors.
The sculpture can be attributed to a workshop active during the first quarter of the 16th century in the central Apennines, between Umbria, Lazio, and Abruzzo.
The Christ sculpture measures approximately 80 cm by 60 cm in width.
