Portrait Of A Noble Knight From The First Half Of The 18th Century
Artist: à Etudier
An interesting oil on canvas portrait of a nobleman from a high-ranking family, likely from central Italy. The helmet at the bottom right may indicate that the sitter was a knight, allude to the defense of his lineage, or that he was historically engaged on the military front. The gentleman's appearance and manner reflect characteristic features of the Enlightenment era, as do his ostentatious and rich attire of various fabrics and embroidery, and the rich velvet cloaks that the painter has rendered in a naturalistic manner. Likewise, the interesting glimpse of his right hand resting on the knob of his walking stick reveals a striking ruby ring.
The sitter was portrayed in full figure, with a three-quarter view and a diagonal body, showcasing the richness of his costume and his proud, confident expression, directed toward the viewer. This portraiture style recalls that of late 17th-century classicists such as Andrea Sacchi and Carlo Maratti, and would later find repercussions in the triumphant, rococo paintings of Pompeo Batoni.
Anonymous portraitist of the Roman school, active in the Papal States during the first half of the 18th century.
The painting measures: canvas 74cm x 99cm, frame 94cm x 120cm.
The carved and gilded "Salvator Rosa" frame is contemporary with the painting and therefore from the first half of the 18th century.
The painting is in good overall condition, is on its first canvas, and is well cleaned with the vibrant pigmentation of the painted surface.
