"Expulsion Of Hagar And Ishmael, Oil On Copper From The Second Half Of The 17th Century"
An interesting oil painting on copper plate of remarkable pictorial quality, it depicts a scene described in the Old Testament, "The Expulsion of Hagar and Ishmael." It is a painting of remarkable quality that could benefit from closer study. It is interesting to note the rapid and contemptuous pictorial style, especially the depiction of the figures, which are somewhat caricatural, resembling the figures of the mature Salvator Rosa, and the treatment of the thick, creased draperies, in a style reminiscent of Nordic models. Indeed, it is possible that it was painted by a Nordic painter active in Italy around the mid-17th century. The treatment of the landscape and architectural elements is very beautiful, with a more relaxed and calm tone.
The painting, in good condition, is mounted in an early 19th-century gilded frame.
The painting is generally in good condition, but some yellowing of the pigments due to layers of dust and dirt is visible. Therefore, we recommend requesting a cleaning of the painted surface to fully enjoy this remarkable work. We have chosen to leave it in this condition to preserve its antique charm.
It measures approximately 31 cm x 25 cm - 40 cm x 34 cm including frame.
A historical certificate of authenticity is included with the sale.
