To escape the massacre of children under two years old ordered by King Herod to eliminate the king of the Jews (Massacre of the Innocents), Joseph and Mary leave Judea with the Child Jesus, then newborn, to reach Egypt . The Rest during the flight into Egypt therefore represents a stopover for the Holy Family during this journey which is recounted in the Gospel according to Saint Matthew (2, 13-23) of the New Testament.
