A Pair Of Paintings From The Bassano Workshop, Created In The Early 17th Century

A delightful pair of oil-on-canvas paintings attributed to the close circle of the Bassano family, particularly to Leandro and Francesco da Ponte—painters who were prolific and successful within the family workshop founded by the master Jacopo Bassano. These two canvases depict biblical scenes: one is linked to the parable of the sower of tares—an iconography often identified as an allegory of autumn—while the other is a scene from the *Supper at Emmaus*, an interior scene typical of the Bassanos’ work, which they often depicted in their interior studies featuring various figures, animals, and everyday household objects.
These canvases are workshop versions of famous works by Jacopo Da Ponte, now in the Pitti Palace—specifically, the one depicting the biblical parable—while the “Supper at Emmaus,” now in the Pilotta Palace in Parma, is attributed to Francesco; a prototype of this scene is in Vienna,

The paintings are executed with meticulous attention to detail and the skilled hand of an artist adept at working on a very small scale with numerous details, executed with such care that it cannot be ruled out that they were created by the closest collaborators of these masters, who helped disseminate the themes of the Bassano school. The colors are vivid and bright, especially in the painting featuring the sower; in contrast, the Supper at Emmaus has a darker, browner tone—being an interior scene—and appears less sharp, though it is nonetheless meticulously detailed.
The canvases are in excellent condition and framed in beautiful, original gilded wooden Louis XIV frames.
