Carved Wooden Annunciation Within A Finely Carved Frame, First Half Of The 17th Century.
An interesting 17th-century sculpture in which the scene of the Annunciation is superbly carved by a woodcarver from central-northern Italy, where the two reliefs, each about 60 cm high, are carefully modeled both in their anatomical details and in the rhythmic drapery.
The angel holding a lily made of metal elements is very beautiful, but unfortunately its wings are missing.
The sacred scene, which draws on Tuscan prototypes from the High Renaissance, was designed to be displayed against a niche or on a wall, and for this reason was not executed in the round; it was later incorporated into a display case and placed within this finely carved antique frame, which retains its beautiful original gilding, dating from a period ranging from the late 16th century to the early 17th century.
The sculptures are attributed to a notable sculptor from the Ligurian region or northern Tuscany.
The work is of interest both for its size and for the quality of the carved frame, as well as the sculptural elements themselves.
The interior dimensions of the frame are 73 x 92 cm—the exterior dimensions are 103 x 122 cm.
A certificate of authenticity is included with the sale.
