Large Studio Model By Jean-baptiste Carpeaux (1827–1875), Bust With Roses, 19th Century
Artist: épreuve Carpeaux
Large edition model by Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux (1827–1875), unsigned
bust with roses in patinated terracotta, late 19th century.
This bust is taken from the group sculpture *La Danse* for the Opéra Garnier (1869). The model is Miette, an actress of the time. She is recognizable by her curly hairstyle with small roses in her hair, her head thrown back, her gaze in ecstasy, the highly dynamic drapery sliding over her shoulder—typical of Carpeaux’s sensual and baroque style—and the reddish-brown patina of the terracotta.
This is a terracotta workshop model. The quality of the drapery’s modeling and the delicacy of the face correspond well to the posthumous editions produced by Carpeaux’s studio between 1875 and 1895.
