Important 18th Century Wall Console With Gold Leaf Gilding
Large gilded wood sconce console, French, 18th century, Louis XV Rococo.
The acanthus leaves, C-shaped scrolls and asymmetrical movement are typical of the Rococo period, circa 1740-1770. The escutcheon shape at the top indicates that it was intended to be set against a wall.
Remarkable carved wood covered with gold leaf on primer. The patina, the cracks and the way the light catches show that this is real antique gold leaf.
