Pair Of Louis XI Period Armchairs, Aubusson Tapestry
Evidence suggesting Aubusson: Central floral motif surrounded by a medallion: very typical of Aubusson productions from the late 18th to early 19th centuries. Soft, slightly faded palette (pinks, greens, grayish blues): characteristic of Aubusson, often more rustic and painterly. Relatively thick and irregular weave, visible on the worn seat: Aubusson was predominantly low-warp, resulting in a less refined finish than Beauvais. Common use for furniture (Louis XVI/Transition armchairs): Aubusson produced a great deal of upholstery for seats. Why Beauvais is less likely: Beauvais tapestries are generally: finer and more precise in design, with brighter and better-preserved colors, often reserved for royal or aristocratic commissions, and therefore of very high quality. Here, the design is elegant but not "clean" or sophisticated enough for authentic Beauvais. Probable dating
