Oval Gilded Wooden Mirror With A Pediment, Napoleon III Period, Louis XVI Style
Large oval ceremonial mirror with a 19th-century pediment and base, circa 1860–1890, in the Louis XVI style.
Carved, stuccoed, and gilded wood with two gilding techniques and light gold gilding with a warm patina. Beveled glass, added later. The oval frame features a grooved molding, a frieze of water leaves and godrons, followed by a row of pearls along the inner edge; the upper pediment is openwork, symmetrical, with a large central leafy palmette from which large coiled volutes, acanthus scrolls, and small flowers radiate. A stylized shell motif appears in the lower section; the lower base is a pendant, decorated with a palmette and cascading foliage, echoing the pediment. The whole piece is highly sculptural, in high relief, and well-openwork.
The oval mirror is beveled around the edges.
