Bronze De Milieu Diane La Chasseresse Signe Félix Coutant XIXeme
Artist: Félix Coutant
A bronze sculpture on its original wooden base covered in silk velvet, signed Félix Jules Coutan (1848-1939), depicting Diana the Huntress reclining with her quiver; at her feet, her nymph. It is a beautiful composition, visible from all sides, resting on its original base. This representation of Diana the Huntress is rare, as she is more often depicted standing. The artist's signature is on the base (cartouche) and at the bottom of the sculpture. The very attractive patina is noteworthy. Some of Félix Coutan's other works include: "France at the Renaissance," an ornamental statue at the base of the pylon on the left bank upstream, Pont Alexandre III, Paris; "Fountain of Progress" on the Champ de Mars for the 1889 Paris Universal Exposition; and "The Eagle Hunters," 1900, a high-relief plaster sculpture in the Musée d'Orsay, Paris.
