Coptic Processional Cross, Bronze, Egypt Or Ethiopia
Coptic Orthodox bronze processional cross, most likely from Egypt or Ethiopia, early to first half of the 20th century. In perfect condition. Beautiful and pleasing antique patina.
Attached to the end of a pole and carried by priests during celebrations and major religious holidays, these crosses—unlike those of the Roman Catholic tradition—do not depict Christ on the cross. This theological choice symbolically emphasizes not the agony of Christ with the cross as an instrument of his suffering, but rather the cross as a symbol of victory over death through the Resurrection and the Ascension. It is also worth noting the significant divergence between the Christian West and the Christian East, the latter having chosen aniconism over idolatry. The intertwined motifs here can be interpreted as a symbol of eternity and the immeasurability of God.
