Artist: Gabriel Fournier (1893-1963)
Oil on panel: Still Life by Gabriel Fournier (1893-1963), French painter. In a beautiful cerused carved wood frame from Montparnasse. Perfect condition.

Accurate execution, influenced by the composition of Cézanne's still lifes, flat colors typical of Fauvism.
Panel dimensions: 55.5 x 45.5 cm.
Artist's biography:
"Gabriel Francisque Alexis Fournier was born on May 26, 1893, around 5 p.m., in Grenoble (Isère department) at his parents' home. He was the son of Alexis Gabriel Fournier (an accountant) and Marie Antoinette Barlet (a homemaker), who were married and then aged 31 and 29 respectively. During his youth, Gabriel Fournier's vocation was shaped by Lucien Mainssieux, a family friend." Later, Jules Fesser introduced him to his collection of several hundred landscapes by Johan Jongkind. He entered the Grenoble School of Art in 1908, the Lyon National School of Fine Arts in 1910, and the Paris National School of Decorative Arts in 1912. In Montmartre and Montparnasse, he frequented the artists of the School of Paris. He collaborated with Raoul Dufy and frequented La Rotonde, where he associated with Amedeo Modigliani, Moïse Kisling, and Chaïm Soutine, and also met Pablo Picasso. He received a contract from Léopold Zborowski and exhibited with Henri Matisse. In 1928, he settled in Saint-Paul-de-Vence, then in Roquevaire. After returning to Paris, he lived in Fontainebleau from 1935 onward, thus earning the nickname "Bonnard of Fontainebleau." He finally moved to Ormesson during the last three years of his life. Fournier painted primarily landscapes, still lifes, and portraits—mostly nudes—of his wife, Mado."
