"Miniature Of The Holy Virgin, Sancta Maria Virgo, Neo-gothic 19th Century"
Miniature on paper representing the Holy Virgin. Neo-Gothic work 19th in the style of the 16th. In a gilded wooden frame in good condition. On a starry blue background, the Holy Virgin is represented to us with a halo, her hands joined. The halo, gilded with leaf, is decorated with four crosses and the words "Sancta Maria Virgo". Her gaze is directed towards the heavens. A pink ribbon is encircled on her beautiful long and wavy hair. Her white dress blends brilliantly with her immaculate complexion. Under this icon, on a background of gold leaf it is written: "She is Immaculate!" "O Mary, joy of the earth and rapture of Heaven, brilliant Lily of the adorable Trinity, Rose freshly blossomed from the divine Parterre, all creation exalts you and blesses you. Vble Louis de Blois" Poetic, spiritual and full of symbolism. Some letters are in gold leaf. "Vble" here means "Venerable". The signature "Vble Louis de Blois" refers to Louis de Blois-Châtillon, known as Louis de Blois, 1506-1566, Benedictine monk of the abbey of Liessies (Northern France) of which he was abbot from 1530 until his death. Reformer of his abbey and personal friend of Charles V, he left as a legacy many spiritual writings. The text inscribed on our miniature is therefore most certainly a passage from these writings. The surrounding frieze is finely crafted. It unequivocally takes up the stylistic codes of Gothic art with its pointed arches and fleurs-de-lis.
