Tabako-ire, Dragon-decorated Tobacco Box, Silver-colored Leather With Silk Embroidery, Japan, Edo/meiji Period
Tabako-Ire, tobacco box, Japan, late Edo / early Meiji period, 19th century. Leather body, silk embroidery, main clasp in silver, small clasp inside made of bone. Decorated with a dragon swirling in clouds on a purplish-blue background. The silver clasp features another dragon (kanamono). Two bronze loops on the top allow the pouch to be hung from a kimono. The original color is very well preserved and still quite vivid on the inside of the pouch (see photo 5). In fair condition. A very beautiful collector’s item.
